CENTCOM describes the three vessels as part of a multibillion-dollar "shadow network" funding the IRGC and its regional proxies [2].

What is new from Tehran is the framing. In a statement carried by state broadcaster IRIB, the IRGC Navy said the US attacked the three Iranian tankers "out of desperation to close the Strait of Hormuz" — turning the closure accusation back on Washington — and repeated its warning that vessels making "any suspicious movement to cross unauthorised waterways" will be targeted [2]. Iran's Foreign Ministry again called the strikes a violation of UN Charter Article 2(4) and a war crime [2].

The genuinely new number is on the consumer side. GasBuddy expects the US national average gasoline price to reach $4.03 a gallon on Labor Day, above the previous record of $3.83 set in 2012; the average stood near $4.13 on Thursday, up almost a dollar year on year [1]. US refinery utilisation is at 98%, the highest since 2018, and gasoline inventories of 205.7 million barrels sit below the 217.6 million five-year August average [1]. Brent closed at $96.28 on Friday, its highest since 24 July [1].

One caveat: these are US retail and inventory figures, not a measure of Gulf traffic. The flow estimates this feed has carried remain contested, and neither report offers independent confirmation of the IRGC's claim to have hit three tankers inside the strait.
